These small antelopes are known
elsewhere as the “steinbok” an unfortunate
choice as “steinbok” is the
German name for the ibex (carpa ibx). They are widely
distributed little
animals, inhabitants of open country not occurring in forest, dense
woodland, rocky hills
or mountains, and largely absent from desert
regions. Only males
carry horns. Steenbok
are solitary except when the
female is with calf or, when in oestrus
is accompanied by a
male.
Both sexes are territorial and
defend their areas against others. Serious fights are rare
and juveniles
make of when they see an adult. They lie flat to escape detection, hide
in grass
and will only flush at the last moment, running of rapidly,
sometimes pausing momentarily
to look back, before running on. They are
mainly browsers but also graze.
