Probably the only true
gazelle found in the sub region, with some maintaining that the
Impala is also a gazelle. These beautiful and graceful antelopes are
inhabitants of the
more arid western parts of the country. In early
days they roamed free in their millions,
covering landscape as they
migrated from place to place. Nowadays in South Africa
they are
found in confined reserves and farms.

Both males and females of these
unmistakable animals carry horns although those
of the females are
smaller and thinner. They are gregarious and form small heards.
They are
loosely territorial and a male may retain a female heard, but will not
force them
so remain if they wish to leave. They also form large
bachelor groups.
The movement of
the springbok is that of grace and
beauty. Normally they move slowly
but will break out into
fast trot. They can gallop at speeds of in excess 80km per hour,
which
is accomplished with
ears laid back. It is however most dramatics and
accomplished in the springbok which, in
stress or while being pursued,
will bounce
repeatedly, high in the air, stiff-legged, with all
feet
meeting the ground together and
with arched back. They are both grazers and
browsers, eating the karoid bushes, the leaves
and shoots of trees and
grass.
