Klipspringers are small
antelope, ideally suited to their rocky habitat.
They move on the
tips of their unique hooves which are of a consistency
of very hard
rubber. In this region
only males have horns, but in the parts of
Tanzania and further north, some females
carry weak thinner horns.
They have clearly seen rounded preorbital glands immediately in
front of
the eyes. As
the same suggest they make their home in rocky
areas, they
use anything from rocky
boulder-strewn riverbeds, rocky
outcrops on plains,
to rocky boulder-strewn riverbeds,
rocky
outcrops on plains to rocky hills
and kranzes. They are very fast
and agile, leaping
and bouncing up impossible
rock faces from
boulder to boulder, easy eluding
any pursuer.

They are diurnal and are most
active in the early morning and late afternoons,
but in
cooler weather
are active throughout the day. They are mainly browsers
but also
graze
extensively. They will eat twigs, leaves, mosses, grasses and
fruit
often standing
up on their hind legs to reach succulent food. They are
not dependent on water,
assimilating all that is necessary from their
diet. They
will however drink, if water is
available.
