Common duiker also known as the grey or crowned
duiker, these small antelope
very considerably in color, from
grayish-buff to reddish-yellow across their range.
Underparts
are
whitish. Males have a tuft of long black or brown hair between the
horns.
There is a
broad dark band form the horns down to the nostrils,
but sometimes only
confined to the
lower part of the face. Only males
have horns, maximum length about 18cm,
but vary
occasionally the females
have short stunted horns.
They are solitary, mainly diurnal animals,
active usually in the early mornings and
late afternoons, with activity
extended late into the
night especially ion clear moonlit nights.
Will scream loudly and fight
furiously if captured, using both the back legs and sharp horns
with
good effect. Normally a quiet species, they will occasionally snort
nasally when the
young bleat loudly if afraid. A single calf I produced,
born in the depths of thick vegetation.
Almost exclusively browser, will
rarely eat grass. They are delicate eaters and can be
problem animals in
that they nip off the tenderest twigs and shoots form ornamental
shrubbery, agricultural crops and young plantation trees. Will rarely
drink, relying on their
diet for water.
