These large, ox-like bovids have
a reputation for savagery and cunning and
not without reason. Despite the fact that they are solely
vegetarian, they are responsible
for
the deaths of many people throughout the continent and are rightly
feared by all with
whom
they come into contact. The animals are quick-tempered and
will not hesitate to use
their
massive horns to ram and to gore if they perceive any threat
whatsoever.
They are generally most active in the evening, night and
morning, resting up in the
shade
during the heat of the day. They are gregarious and can congregate
in massive
herds of in excess of a thousand animals, sometimes up to
three thousand. Old bulls
and young
males mote off and form bachelor herds, some old males move away to
become solitary
and are most prone to lion predation.
They need grass and shade and plentiful supply of water, as they
generally drink twice
daily and will avoid areas where these three criteria are not met.
Their main predators
are lions. Young, sick and weak are also taken by wild dogs and
spotted hyenas.
A single
calf Is produced and rarely twins are born. They
are almost exclusively grazers,
but will take
a small amount of browse. The heat of the day causes them to stop
feeding
and they will
retire to shade to ruminate. Most feeding is at night.
