These animals once ranged in their hundreds of thousands across the central open
plains of Southern Africa.  These peculiar animals, which run with a characteristic
rocking-horse motion, are bad-tempered and dangerous animals when cornered.

Both sexes carry horns, with those of the female being shorter and less robust.

The social structure of these gregarious animals involves dominant
territorial males, females and bachelor herds. This dominant male is
usually only displaced when it is too weak to defend itself from the up and
coming young male challenger of four or more years of age.

When resting they do not always seek shade, but rest lying down with
the rump towards the sun. The major enemies in their areas are now extinct,
with the exception of the black backed jackal, which will bring down a calf.

They are predominantly grazers but will in the winter month’s brows the
karoid bushes. They are dependent on water and will drink twice daily.
